  • Ah, you're right on there. We need more efficient code rather than faster and faster furnace-like CPUs.

Don't Give Me More Speed, Give Me Efficiency
  • "Pro pecuniam laborabum" (sic?). Trans, "Will work for money" (did I spell this properly?). Apple does have competition, actually. It's called Windows/Microsoft. ;>)

    Apple Needs Competition
  • Because I DON'T have a data plan. Ad hoc expenses are quite high with Fido. Will need to unlock phone, of course.

  • Water-resistant I'd guess. Good for biking in the rain definitely though.

    Review: Axio Fuse Hardpack
  • I was trying to be too cunning by half here. It's Pelican, not Penguin. I guess it doesn't matter if I name another brand here. Glad you like your Axio, Maarten. It's a pretty impressive case over all! Thanks for the comment, James.

    Review: Axio Fuse Hardpack
  • $50us max, but omg, they are durable. Better than other hard cases I have looked at, definitely. Took mine cave diving last Fall too.
  • My first laptop, the 520C. I haven't used a mouse on a laptop or a track ball by choice since!
  • My wife's COMPUTER lssted just over three years, which included a year in the Afghani desert, which was a little harsher than usual. My wife herself's lasted over fourteen years so far. From Windows 3.1 all the way up to Vista!
  • Chris: Oh, you had clubs! We had rocks, and we had to share them. And we didn't even have mammoths. Just mastodons. And we had to eat them raw, since we didn't have fire yet. Three years is about the amount of time I expect a device to work, and am happy if it last longer. My daughter's laptop was about six years old. My wife's just over 3 years. I can maybe get my wife's computer repaired. The iPod, well, I dropped it. First time it was out of its bulletproof case in months. Ironic.
  • I never saw an odd combination of cards like that, deniz. Weird. Must have been remembering building the forts or something. ;>) Now I just work, or play Mahjong occasionally.

    Review: iPod Solitaire
  • I've used PhotoShop from version 1.0 on, from when it came on four floppies I think it was. No, Adobe won't be issuing PhotoShop for your phone, BUT they might eventually have a 'Phono'Shop product that can retouch the images on your handheld. And you could always connect via thin-client, Citrixy-like, to a box running PhotoShop. Just can't imagine you being too productive. You could, and here's the application, do a quick jump in on someone else's installation who was having problems and tell them, or show them, how to do something. Being able to be there will be possible Doing AutoCAD? Not for any real work.

The End of the Operating Systems War
  • Nice to see some response here! Sorry, Aurora77. Hope all the head shaking doesn't hurt your neck. ;>) The point of all this was what an OS is and does is going to get redefined very very quickly now. People run applications, not operating systems, for the most part. I can run very intensive applications, including PhotoShop say, over a thin-client with moderate bandwidth. Screens aren't hard to throw back and forth. Audio and so forth, video, all require a more realtime application, certainly, but the very vast majority of users, those who have are the volume money driving development, are not going to care too much abut privacy. As for gamers, well, not much of an OS on an XBox say, really. Or a Playstation. It's the application running that matters, except for [email protected] and geeks. Imagine running Office 2010 or something like it on your DVD/PVR, saving your files to your Google/Secure account.

  • A big sign on each power saving Mac monitor, maybe? "Poke me. I'm working." We could get t-shirts made up, for folks to wear at work too?

  • Glad to hear your iPod survived! I think the case needs to be a little less flexible somehow, for the very reason you state about the dirty. Tighter perhaps, I'm not sure.
